- Beyond the famous
Beyond the allure of Pehalgam, the serenity of Dal Lake, and the grandeur of Gulmarg, there lies a Kashmir that is equally resplendent and adventurous.
This call to focus on “Kashmir beyond the three iconic destinations” has multiple dimensions. Firstly, it speaks to the economic benefits derived from diversifying the tourist experience. By highlighting and promoting the lesser-known destinations, Kashmir can witness a more equitable distribution of tourist traffic throughout the year. This not only creates livelihood opportunities for the local population but also ensures that the economic gains from tourism are more evenly spread, contributing to sustainable development. Secondly, it underscores the importance of offering a wide variety of experiences and destinations to tourists. Travellers – domestic or international – seek novelty, adventure, and the thrill of discovery. By spotlighting the hidden treasures of Kashmir, tourism authorities can satisfy this desire for exploration, attracting visitors with diverse interests and tastes. Lastly, emphasising the other, less-explored part of Kashmir is an avenue to showcase the cultural richness and diversity of the region. Kashmir boasts vibrant traditions, art, and heritage that extend beyond the famous locales. By promoting these aspects of Kashmir’s cultural identity, the Valley can offer a more profound and immersive experience to tourists, fostering a deeper appreciation for its unique heritage.
Beyond Pehalgam, Dal Lake, and Gulmarg – is not just a journey; it is a pilgrimage to discover the roots that Kashmir weaves, a quest for wisdom as much as wonder. As one ventures into the lesser-known treasures of Kashmir, the land of sufis and saints unfolds with every step.
- The hidden blessings
- Verinag Spring: The trail into the unknown begins with destinations like the historic Verinag. Verinag Spring holds a unique place in Kashmir’s history, with an octagonal stone basin and an arcade surrounding it, both built by the Mughal emperor Jahangir in 1620 AD. This spring is exceptional in that it never dries up or overflows, and is the primary source of the majestic River Jhelum. Officially recognised by the Archaeological Survey of India as a ‘monument of national importance’, the Verinag Spring and its Mughal arcade stand as enduring testaments to the Valley’s cultural heritage.
- Doodhpatri Meadow: The journey continues to the Doodhpathri meadows, where velvety green carpets stretch as far as the eye can see, creating a symphony of serenity. Here, amidst the aromatic alpine grass, one can’t help but feel the profound resonance of Nature’s timelessness, a reminder that in the embrace of these lesser-explored treasures, one can uncover not only the beauty of the land but also the wisdom that has been imparted by generations of its people.
- Sheikh-ul-Alam: The Tomb of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani, locally known as Sheikh-ul-Alam, offers a glimpse into Kashmir’s spiritual heart. It’s a place where the teachings of tolerance and unity preached by the great saint come alive. The tomb stands as a testament to the timeless wisdom of Kashmir’s spiritual traditions.
- Naranag: This picturesque tourist village is located approximately 8 kilometres from Kangan and sits 6 kilometres upstream from the Sind river. This enchanting destination is celebrated for its captivating meadows, lakes, and mountains. It also serves as a gateway for thrilling trekking expeditions to Mount Haramukh, an imposing peak towering at 16,870 feet, and the scenic Gangabal Lake.
- Martand Sun Temple: This is an ancient architectural masterpiece which stands as a timeless sentinel, bearing witness to a bygone era that has gracefully transcended the sands of time. Its weathered stones and intricate carvings serve as a poignant reminder that the concept of time, which often consumes the world around us, is, in essence, an illusion in the face of such enduring craftsmanship. This sacred site, dedicated to the sun, not only reflects the architectural prowess of its creators but also invites contemplation on the cyclical nature of existence, where history, culture, and spirituality merge into a seamless tapestry that continues to inspire and reverence.

Situated amidst the majestic Zanskar and Pir Panjal mountain ranges, this pristine lake presents enchanting opportunities for sightseeing and exploration. The Bangus Valley, located in Kupwara District, lies to the west of Handwara town within the Pir Panjal range. Renowned for its inspiring natural allure, the valley boasts snow-capped peaks, verdant forests, and pristine, crystal-clear streams. - Anchar Lake: This was once a thriving tourist destination reachable by shikaras from Dal Lake, and which has now suffered from pollution, encroachment, and illegal construction over the years. It requires attention and cleaning. Once restored, it will stand as a symbol of Nature’s resilience amidst urban chaos. Surrounded by the hustle and bustle of city life, it will provide a serene retreat for visitors seeking refuge from urban noise. Its revitalised waters and surroundings will offer a space for reflection and connection with Nature, providing solace amidst modern life’s challenges.
