Jammu and Kashmir

Dr Javid ur Rehman. Kashmir Administrative Services (KAS). Assistant Director, Tourism, Jammu and Kashmir. Son of Jenab Abdul Rehman. Hailing from Dahama, a small and backward village in Vilgam tehsil in frontier diststrict Kupwara.

Dr Rehman, aged 31 years, is a shining example that with hard work, determination and the dreams for a shining future, one can achieve one’s most cherished goals in life.

In 2015, he successfully appeared for the prestigious KAS. Today, Dr Rehman is a source of inspiration for the poor youth, who see in him a role model for a happy, successful life.

Dr Rehman was born in a very poor family. His father is a mason who worked hard to give a good education to his son. He got his early education at Light House Public School, Vilgam and later studied at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Lolab district, Kupwara. Dr Rehman persued Bachelors in Veterinary Science in 2012. He did Masters at Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.

Dr Rehman recalls that he was doing post-graduation when he qualified for KAS. “I was very happy that I had qualified for KAS. My qualifying for KAS was a big source of joy for my parents. They felt very proud of me. Unfortunately, my mother passed away two months later. My mother was an iron lady. I have learnt so much in life from her and from my father,” said Dr Rehman.

One of the most striking memories of Dr Rehman’s childhood is when he joined Class 6 in 1999. He remembers that he did not have enough money for his education. He was a meritorious student and his teachers believed in his ability. They all collected Rs 50 each for his tuition fee and paid the money. “I cannot forget that day. I am deeply indebted to my teachers at Light House Public School, Vilgam and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya. They supported me financially and also morally,” says Dr Rehman.

Dr Rehman was a bright student and the topper of his class. At every annual function of the school, he was awarded. “I remember that I never needed to study at night. Paying attention in the class and following up on lessons myself was enough for me,” he recalls. While in college, Dr Rehman secured the all-India rank of 13 in the exam conducted by Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) for post-graduation.

Owing to high merit and good performance as a student, Dr Rehman was also supported by J&K Yateem Foundation and Islamic Study for his education. “I am where I am today because of the support given to me by J&K Yateem Foundation. An NRI doctor settled in UK helped me financially for the veterinary science degree through Saffron Trust,” said Dr Rehman.

After completing his Masters degree in veterinary science, Dr Rehman served in the Sheep Husbandry Department as veterinary assistant surgeon for one year. Since May 2020, he is posted at Gulmarg as Assistant Director Tourism. About his current role, Dr Rehman said, “Kashmir is a globally-popular tourism destination. Tourism is one of the main boosters of our economy. I want to ensure that tourists visit Gulmarg and other beautiful places in Kashmir, and enjoy its highly pleasing destinations.”

His message for the youth: Nobody can stop you from achieving your dreams if you are willing to work for them. Work hard with dedication and commitment. One day you will be successful.
